Hidden in the Cloud – The Process Platform for Enterprise Software (SOAWorld)
Cloud computing remains the most discussed subject in IT. Many analysts believe that it will fundamentally change how IT services are used, pointing to lower costs and accelerated time-to-market for software-based projects. But cloud computing means more for a company than just technology. It holds the potential for establishing a new approach for innovations in business operations. The cloud forms the technological foundation for new types of collaboration that finally sweep aside the barriers separating business from IT. More people, more expertise and more business information can be integrated and aligned with business strategy, giving a company greater momentum and making it more effective.
Monitor SharePoint User Profile Changes (WindowsITPro)
SharePoint Server 2010 is a great platform for storing information about the users in an organization. Using the User Profile Service application and its related components, you can configure SharePoint to store a variety of information about users and synchronize that information with external storage, such as Active Directory (AD) or any other data source to which you can connect using Business Connectivity Services (BCS). Users can then edit their information using the user profile pages. The external storage sources will then be updated automatically with this new information, thereby making the information more relevant and timely throughout the organization.
Office 365 Beta Testers Run into Mobile, Mac Issues and Other Headaches (PCWorld)
It’s been two days since the public release of Office 365 beta and Microsoft forums are lively to say the least. On the Office 365 community forum there are heaps of technical questions and complaints around some very specific problems that beta testers are encountering, as well as a smattering of compliments about the service. The majority of complaints—the threads with 10 or more posts; focus on issues with SharePoint Online, Lync interoperability with Mac, and Exchange mobile syncing.
Microsoft’s Hosted Apps Earn Federal Certification (PCWorld)
Microsoft said on Wednesday that its BPOS-Federal service has received an important certification that allows federal organizations to use the service. Microsoft’s Business Productivity Online Standard Suite is a set of services that includes Exchange, SharePoint, Office Live Meeting and Office Communications Online. The service achieved certification this week under the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), which established a stringent security standard that some federal agencies must require their vendors to comply with.
The Hidden Internet Explorer Tax (InformationWeek)
Many companies justify their reluctance to upgrade from Windows XP and/or Internet Explorer 6 by pointing to the high costs of buying new systems or upgrading old ones. These are the costs that are easy to see, since they end up as a line item in the IT budget. When management asks the question, “Is this really necessary?” it can be hard to make the case for spending that money when faced with other priorities.
Microsoft Co-founder Allen: Windows Phone Needs to Win (eWeek)
Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s new memoir, “Idea Man,” is more than an account of the company’s early days, or even a colorful portrayal of the executives—including Bill Gates and current CEO Steve Ballmer—who turned a tiny software startup into a tech-world behemoth: It’s also full of advice for Microsoft as it battles Google and Apple in smartphones and tablets.

Quick and Painless: Adding Documents to SharePoint, Including Their Metadata (SharePointDevWiki)
Dump a document into a random directory on a hard drive, and it’s guaranteed that you will struggle finding it in a month’s time. Saving a document in a SharePoint library is different. Stored securely in a central location, documents are easily accessible by your team members and can be easily viewed and searched based on the attached metadata. Migrating documents from a messy directory on a hard drive to a well-defined SharePoint library is quick and painless with a free recipe described in this post.
Silverlight in SharePoint – Basics of Hello World! (SharePoint Magazine)
In this second article of the series, I’m going to build a Silverlight application that can be hosted from within a SharePoint web part. We will use Visual Studio 2010 to build a simple “Hello World” type application, but add a few touches to make our application configurable. In SharePoint 2010, we have an out of the box Silverlight web part that can host almost any Silverlight application. For now, we will utilize this built-in web part and later in the series, we will create our own web part to host our applications.

This series is my attempt at explaining how nonprofits are successfully leveraging the SharePoint platform. It is my hope to explain how these inspiring organizations are staying within budget and the approach they use for getting it right the first time.
Setting the Portal Site Connection with PowerShell in SharePoint 2010 (Secrets of SharePoint)
When I do SharePoint admin talks I also preach the value of scaling by site collections instead of webs. This provides numerous benefits like permissions boundaries, scalability, and quotas. One of the first pushbacks I get on this is navigation. Navigation is also bounded at the site collection level, so each site collection has different navigation, which makes it difficult for end users to get out of the site collection to other SharePoint content. Discoverability is an issue.
